1. Tell them together with your spouse.
2. Develop a joint narrative with your spouse about the breakup.
3. Don’t make it complicated: simple is best.
4. Don’t tell them more than they ask about or that is necessary to get the idea across.
5. Do tell them it’s not their fault.
6. Do tell them that you and their other parent love them and will always love them and be their parents.
7. Do let them know that the breakup is sad and hard for everyone.
8. Don’t discuss your relationship problems or the faults of your partner with them.
9. Don’t wait until the moving truck shows up at the house to tell them.
