Questions You Want Answered > Spousal Support > What is alimony?
Alimony is a sum of money paid by one spouse to or on behalf of the other spouse pursuant to a divorce or separtion agreement which is intended for the support of the recipient. Alimony, unlike child support, is generally taxable income to the recipient and deductible from the taxable income of the paying spouse, so long as the payments meet the criteria set forth by the Internal Revenue Service.
